Floral Oil Painting Workshop
Date: Thursday – Saturday, April 2 – 4, 2026
Time: 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
Cost: $300 ANA Members / $350 Non-members
ANA Studio
300 N. 2nd Street
Rogers, AR 72756
My goal for this workshop is to have fun, learn from each other, laugh a lot and create beautiful paintings.
During this 3-day workshop, you will create a floral painting including preparing the canvas, underpainting and bringing your florals to life with blending and details. You will learn tips and techniques to enhance your approach and add to your artistic toolbag.
Materials List
- Pictures of the subject flower – 1 black and white and 1 in color If you paint fast or your flower is very simple, bring several. Please keep your subject selection fairly simple – It would be challenging to do a whole bouquet in the amount of time we have –
- Canvas ( I like YES! Canvases because they have a smoother surface which is great for Florals – available at Jerry’s Artrama; Fredrix is also a good one.) Canvas size of your choice up to 12 x 16 (Size is limited to be able to complete the painting in the time frame with appropriate attention to detail and using table top easels provided by ANA) You may bring your own easel if you prefer. I also use canvas that is 1 1⁄2” thick (doesn’t have to be framed). Your choice here.
- Detailed drawing of subject on the canvas sprayed with Workable Fixative (I’ll have it if you don’t)
- Oil paints (bring what you like to use) I like Rembrandt and M.Graham (both have a creamy texture)
- Specific Colors for underpaintings
• Titanium White
• Mars Black
• Burnt Umber
• Permanent Rose or Alizarin Crimson
• Ultramarine Blue
• Burnt Sienna
• Yellow Ochre
Other colors relating to your specific subject – reds/yellows/blues, etc. NOTE: Please don’t buy a lot of paints – I will share what I have if you don’t have something - Liquin (Winsor & Newton) or Galkyd (Gamblin) or Galkyd Lite. All three of these will speed up drying time. I uses Liquin most of the time
- Gamsol or other odorless mineral spirits
- Brushes – Bring your favorites (I use Black Swan Angular brushes 10, 8 and 4 for this size painting) For me, angular brushes allow me to get into corners and make fine strokes – but that is my personal preference, Most oil painters use filberts, flats or hog bristles. Use what you are comfortable with.
Suggested sizes:
- 1” or 3⁄4 for underpainting
- 8 or 6 for 70% of the painting
- 4 or 2 for refinement and detail
Additional:
- Palette – I use Jack Richeson 9×12 GreyMatters Paper Palette
- Palette knife for mixing
- Paper Towels or cloth for wiping brushes
