The challenges and wonder of art began at the age of three when I painted myself using oil paints. The technique was simple, select brilliant colors, and blend by smearing the medium over my entire body. My mother applied turpentine to remove the paint from my skin, and the result was a irritating rash that I can still remember 67 years later.
After reading an article concerning exposure to various solvents and heavy metals, it was discovered that the U.S. National Cancer Institute conducted two studies that found higher risks of urinary bladder cancer, leukemia and arteriosclerotic heart disease among painters. After working with artists for decades and witnessing what appeared to be toxic exposure from art related materials, I began to research a topic that’s rarely discussed, toxic substances in paint and the handling of these materials from watercolor, oil and pastels.
Paint responsibly!
