Gary Johnson’s

Intuitive and Representational Abstract Watercolor Workshop

This is a four day workshop covering both Intuitive and Representational abstract watercolor techniques.

The first two day portion of the four day workshop is designed to teach all levels of students to paint intuitively, starting without any preconceived ideas. There will be no preliminary planning or drawing for the Intuitive process. This process will dictate a direction as students use watercolor, ink and gouache to implement elements and principles of design. Instruction will start with random ink marks, then color will be added into the painting using a mixture of charcoal, ink, watercolor and gouache to create a final design intuitively. Each morning the instructor will provide a demonstration of the assignment for the afternoon that will incorporate some of the elements and principles of design as well as incorporation of textural materials uncommon in watercolor. Questions are welcome during the demo. The instructor will review work in progress during the afternoon and answer questions related to the students work in progress. The goal will be to create a finished painting that is compositionally and aesthetically pleasing to the artist. It may end up having a representational aspect to it, however, it also may be a totally non representational abstract.

Dates:
Monday, April 29 – Thursday, May 2

Location:
The ANA Gallery@RXH – 121 W. Walnut St, Rogers, AR

The last two days is the Representational Abstract portion of the workshop where the instructor will develop a representational abstract drawing and then paint it using loose watercolor styles to create a finished piece. The goal will then be for the participants to create their own abstract (representational) drawing and then paint it to completion. Questions will be welcome during the demo portion as well as during the afternoon painting session.
