April 15: Julie Gowing Hayes – Breaking the Rules of Traditional Watercolor

After showing a few examples and breaking down the process, I’ll dive into a demonstration of a bold, non-traditional watercolor technique using a gesso-coated surface. This approach opens the door to rich layers of pigment and playful, unexpected ways of moving and manipulating the paint.

You can use  heavy paper or canvas, with one or two thick coats of gesso—no sanding needed. In fact, those raw brush marks are part of the magic, adding texture, energy, and a little extra spark to the final piece. The substrate should be prepared ahead of time as it must be dry before starting to paint.

Time: 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Medium: Work in any medium. Different instructors will be there to coach as needed.
Cost: $30 per class (pay at the class)

Julie Gowing Hayes

Julie Gowing Hayes creates oil and watercolor paintings inspired by the natural world, working primarily in a representational style with subtle impressions of light and atmosphere.

Growing up on a farm in southwest Iowa instilled in her a deep-rooted love for the outdoors. Her father’s involvement in local conservation efforts—tree planting, watershed development, and progressive farming practices—along with her mother’s passion for gardening and birdwatching, fostered in Hayes a lasting respect for the land and the wildlife it sustains. She earned a Studio Art degree from Salem College in Winston-Salem, NC.

Julie is a member of Artists of NW Arkansas, , NOAPS OPAPlein Air Painters of the Ozarks (PAPO), President of Heart of America Artists’ Association and holds Signature Emeritus status with Women Artists of the West (WAOW), where she also serves as a Board Advisor and Co-Chair of the Woolaroc Museum Invitational.
