The Daily Drill

Day One – I will demonstrate how to do an angular abstract painting with three steps that you can watch and learn from.  This will involve an initial drawing followed by blocking in the primary colors leaving a center of interest for later development. Next will be working from light to dark and development of the center of interest.  Last will be additional enhancement of the painting.

Day Two –will involve doing an intuitive abstract where I will demo a lot of different approaches for you to choose from in your painting.  This will involve using many different materials you may choose to use.  I will bring stencils for use by you, tape of various widths, salt, alcohol, etc.  Bring a mouth atomizer if you have one, you may want it for texture.  Most of all, bring an open mind.

Day Three  – will involve a series of demos for doing a painting of abstract glasses and bottles.  This will be a very fun one that everyone in the past has fully enjoyed.

Materials List

  • 2 sheets of 300 LB CP Fabriano Artistico paper cut into half sheets.  I prefer this paper for day one as it involves using a wet on wet wash initially.  This paper stays wet longer and doesn’t ripple or bubble when wet.
  • Other paper as you see fit to use for day 2 and 3.
  • White gouche
  • Watercolors with “wells around” palette; preferably 5-7 colors
  • Clear or white Wax resist crayons or candles
  • A Credit card for scraping
  • 1 1/2 “ or 2” flat brush
  • Several round brushes, No’s. 5,7, and 9.
  • At least one Rigger or liner brush
  • Small brush for signature, 00 or 02.
  • Water bucket.  You know, the large yogurt or cottage cheese variety.
  • Paper towels and Kleenex if you prefer
  • An apron to keep your clothing clean.
  • Salt and Isopropyl Alcohol if you have it.  Don’t worry, I have plenty.
  • H pencil is best for the drawing portion.
  • Derwent watercolor pencils or equivalent
  • Art Graf water-soluble pigment block in various colors if you have them.
  • A soft sponge
  • Anything else you paint with that could prove handy for your style of painting.
  • Roll of tape for masking
  • Waterproof ink pen, V-ball and a Sharpie or two
  • Razor knife or X-acto
